Vetlemyrane
The inhabitants on the farm.
The hosts Even and Liv are living in the main house with three of the
four children, Torstein (b.1989),
Johannes (b.1993) and Astri (b.1997). The oldest son, Knut Endre
(b.1986) is a student in Bergen and comes home for the holidays.
The farm Vetlemyrane is placed in an open and beautiful setting 180 m
above the fjord level. The view is fantastic towards the mountains at
Fyksesundet and towards the south west we have a glipse of the fjord and
the mountains south of the Hardanger fjord. Our new farm was established
in 2005 and 2006 when we dismantled three old houses in Øystese and
moved them to this new location. In the course of rebuilding them we
also
modernized them technically but kept the old style both inside and out.
The farm, a smallholding from the 1650s, has been run by Even’s family
since his great-great grandfather’s time. He cultivated the land from
1866 onwards and kept three cows.
In the barn
We have 50 sheep over the winter. The lambing season is between April
20th and May 10th. At this time of the
year there’s a lot of activity in the barn. From the middle of June to
the middle of September the sheep
graze in the mountains. We may see them close to one of the mountain
farms, and we are often there checking on them. In the summer we always
have a few sheep and lambs at home as well as a flock of turkeys.
Our sheep dog Hera is a great help when collecting the sheep in the
autumn or when moving them to a new pasture.
Blakken is a sturdy horse of the Fjording
breed. We use him mostly as a
saddlehorse
and Liv and Astri are the most eager ”horsemen”.
If you wish
to have a ride that can be arranged.
